WASHINGTON, Oct. 9, 2025 – The 600,000-member IAM Union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers), the nation’s largest aerospace, defense and Service Contract Act labor union, is calling on members of Congress to pass the bipartisan Fair Pay for Federal Contractors Act (S. 2963 / H.R. 5657). The legislation would ensure federal contract workers receive back pay for lost wages during the current government shutdown.
Following the federal government shutdown, U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) and U.S. Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.), along with Sens. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), and Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.), and Rep. Donald Norcross (D-N.J.), Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), introduced the legislation to secure back pay for the thousands of federal contract workers who face furloughs and missed paychecks when the federal government is shutdown.
“Through no fault of their own, many of these families faced the reality of missing payments on their mortgages, student loans, school tuition, car loans, health care premiums, daycare, interest fees, and so many other expenses,” IAM Union International President Brian Bryant wrote to lawmakers in the House and Senate. “Today, they are looking down the barrel of a similar fate. Contract workers and their families should not suffer the consequences of a shutdown they had no hand in creating. Dedicated federal contract workers maintain the aircraft, vehicles and systems that keep our military mission-ready and our nation secure. Many live paycheck to paycheck and are among the first to feel the devastating impact of a government shutdown.”
In addition to urging swift passage of the Fair Pay for Federal Contractors Act, the IAM Union is also condemning the unlawful threat from the Trump administration to withhold back pay from federal workers impacted by the shutdown.
The IAM stands in solidarity with all federal and contract workers and calls on lawmakers in both chambers to move swiftly to end the shutdown and pass the bipartisan Fair Pay for Federal Contractors Act, ensuring that working families are not left behind.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 9, 2025 — The 600-member IAM Union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers), is opposing the nominations of Crystal Carey for General Counsel of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and Scott Mayer and James Murphy for NLRB Members. The IAM Union is urging the U.S. Senate to take no action on these nominees until NLRB Member Gwynne Wilcox, who was unjustly fired by President Donald Trump, is reinstated.
“As I’ve stated before, the IAM urges President Donald Trump to reverse the unprecedented and illegal firing of NLRB Member Wilcox, restore the Board’s independence, and protect workers’ rights,” IAM Union International President Brian Bryant wrote in a letter to members of the U.S. Senate. “The NLRB, with Board members from both political parties, is crucial to the rights of our nation’s private-sector workforce, and without this balance, enforcement of the National Labor Relations Act cannot occur in a fair or impartial way.”
Wilcox was reconfirmed by the Senate in September 2023 with bipartisan support for a term ending Aug. 27, 2028. The IAM Union maintains that the Board must include properly seated members from both political parties to ensure fair and impartial enforcement of the law.

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 3, 2025— The IAM Union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) applauded Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) for pressing Boeing’s chief labor counsel, Scott Mayer, over the company’s refusal to reach a fair deal with 3,200 IAM District 837 members in St. Louis on their ninth week on strike.

“With 3,000 plus residents of my state on strike, unable to work, unable to get healthcare while your CEO is getting paid 30-some million dollars,” said Hawley. “Fairness may be elusive, but that doesn’t look like fairness to me.”
This is not the first time Sen. Hawley has made public comments in support of IAM Union District 837 members on strike. In early September, Hawley was quoted in Missourinet about Boeing’s need to do the right thing by IAM members on strike.
“Management here needs to suck it up and get this thing over with,” said Hawley. “That company is so important to our state, the jobs that it provides, the great things that it produces.”
Boeing’s Defense, Space & Security unit reported $6.6 billion in second-quarter revenue for fiscal 2025, a 10% increase year over year. Yet the company continues to offer proposals that IAM Union District 837 members have repeatedly rejected, as they fail to meet even the most basic thresholds of fairness and dignity.
Negotiations between IAM Union District 837 and Boeing are ongoing under the supervision of a federal mediator.
“We’re tired of Boeing hiding behind posturing and PR spin,” said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “Our members build the jets and defense systems that keep this nation safe, and they deserve a deal that reflects their sacrifice, expertise and value. Boeing’s repeated lowball proposals are a slap in the face to the men and women who power their bottom line. The time for grandstanding is over. Negotiate in good faith now, Boeing.”
